01 The short version
We don’t collect the photos you scan. OCR runs in your browser. We don’t track you across the web. We don’t sell anything. This page explains exactly what little we do store and why.
02 Information you provide directly
If you use the /contact form, your name, email, subject, and message are used only to open a message in your email client addressed to us. That data is transmitted directly from your device to your email provider — it never passes through or is stored on our servers.
We do not require an account. There is no login and no profile to collect.
03 Information collected automatically
We do not run advertising or third-party analytics on this site. There are no tracking pixels, no cross-site identifiers, and no fingerprinting.
The only thing we store on your device is a single localStorage key (tfs-theme) remembering whether you’ve chosen light or dark mode. It never leaves your browser and you can clear it from your browser settings at any time.
04 How the scanner works (and your photos)
When you scan or upload a label, the photo is processed by the Tesseract OCR engine running inside your browser. The image and the extracted text never leave your device. They are not uploaded to, or stored on, any server controlled by us.
Tesseract’s language and WASM engine files are fetched on demand from a third-party CDN the first time you scan. That CDN may record ordinary request logs (IP, timestamp) under its own terms, but no image content is sent to it.
05 Third-party resources
Fonts: Geist and Geist Mono are loaded from Google Fonts, which may record request metadata (IP, user agent). See the Google privacy policy for details.
OCR engine: tesseract.js language/core assets are fetched from their default CDN (unpkg/jsDelivr) on first use.
We link to external regulators (EFSA, FDA, FSSAI, JECFA, IARC, WHO) for reference. We do not control and are not responsible for their privacy practices.
06 Children
TheFoodScanner is an educational tool and not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from anyone, of any age.
07 Your rights
Because we don’t hold personal data about you, there is no account to delete and no data to export. To clear the theme preference, delete the “tfs-theme” key in your browser’s localStorage for this site, or clear site data.
If you’ve emailed us and would like your message deleted from our inbox, reply to that email and we’ll remove it.
08 Changes to this policy
If the way we handle information materially changes, we’ll update the date at the top of this page and the modified sections below.
